The Westboro Baptist Church Have New Neighbours
By Samuel Leighton-Dore
In a prime example of love trumping hate, an 8-year-old transgender girl has taken on the infamous Westboro Baptist Church with nothing but paint.
Teaming up with Planting Peace, an LGBTQ equality charity, Avery Johnson this week created a center for trans people — located directly across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church headquarters in Topeka, Kansas.
Holding workshops and programs for the local gay community, the house is painted with coats of pink and blue, in dedication to the transgender flag.
Thanks to Martin Dunn, a New York City developer, Avery has had her dream of a trans safe-haven realized. Dunn opted to fund the $70,000 project after reading about Avery’s mission in a Daily News article earlier this year.
“The idea was to create something that was a very visible symbol of acceptance and pride,” Dunn said. “The idea that it would be across from a hate group was also really appealing.
“I have three children and if I had a kid that was transgender I would want a place that would celebrate them and accept them,” he added.
“That’s just not available in this country and it should be.”
“I was worried that having a transgender house was just a dream, but now it’s finally real,” budding activist Avery said in a statement to the Daily News.
“I love the transgender flag. It’s beautiful and makes me smile. I’m happy that we will have a house painted like the flag to show that transgender people are beautiful and will make them smile.”
IT SURE MAKES US SMILE, AVERY <3
