40 religious leaders tell Malcolm Turnbull the plebiscite is a bad idea

By James Branson

A GROUP OF RELIGIOUS LEADERS from numerous denominations – Catholics, Anglicans, Uniting Church – have cosigned a letter to Malcolm Turnbull asking him to put a stop to the potentially damaging plebiscite on same sex marriage.

“The negative case will be put by religious groups who claim to speak on behalf of people of faith,” the letter says.

“A volatile, public and politically charged debate could… marginalise faith communities from broader society and alienate LGBTI individuals within religious communities… After decades of legalised discrimination, LGBTI Australians will face an angry, drawn out debate, one likely to multiply existing disadvantages and stigma.”

Couldn’t have said it better ourselves, frankly. Nice one.
