This US politician is using Grindr to talk to voters

Politicians have been slow to pick up on the new ways social media engages with and attracts voters. In the age of Facebook and Twitter, the people who want us to vote for them have to be active online, participating in a to-and-fro with their constituents and providing a direct line to the democratic process.

Huey Ray Fischer, a 23 year old Texan running for the State Legislature, has taken that to another level and is using Grindr and Tinder to connect with voters.

“We are going beyond the traditional campaign strategies,” he told NewNowNext. “Tinder and Grindr help us directly connect with other millennials in a fun way. The electorate is changing and so is the game of politics.”

Amazing.

Describing himself as “the queer son of a formerly undocumented immigrant”, Fischer is fighting against what he views as the Republican Party’s antipathy towards Texas’ queer community.

“Republicans have advanced a hateful agenda against my family and thousands of other Texas families that they intend to continue in 2016,” he says. “As Democrats, we need to stop playing defense. It is time to push back with a positive and progressive agenda that benefits all Texas families.”
