Newtown High School of Performing Arts is changing its gender rules for uniforms

By James Branson

Students at Newtown High School of Performing Arts have managed to convince the powers that be at the leading creative high school to allow them to wear boys or girls uniforms, regardless gender.

Of course, the Australian Christian Lobby quickly condemned the move, once again poking their noses around in a place they’re really, really not welcome.

“To encourage a guy to wear a dress would just be setting him up for bullying,” said Wendy Francis, a spokeswoman for the group.

Yeah… BULLYING BU YOU! Ugh.

As if to prove her own point, Francis went on to say “I don’t get it. It’s a retrograde idea… I find it almost laughable.”

Jo Dwyer, a year 11 student at the school, was happy with the result.

“Our aim was to remove the un-inclusive gender labels from the school uniform, and make it so that anyone could wear any aspect of the uniform without going through a difficult process,” Jo told the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Before the changes were implemented, students had to go through the school with parental permission and notes from psychologists.”
